The Schooly-Sturgis Cemetery is out the Charlotte highway, US 21, to the paved road leading to Red River, then at the first mail-boxes on the left, turn to the left onto a dirt road. This leads to the family plot, a short distance from the paved road and on the right side of the dirt road, in a patch of woods.
The following information was provided by Gerald Collins, address is 601Windmill Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20905-5673.The Daniel Sturgis family lived in 1785 near the town of Milford, Delaware.They probably attended St. Matthew's Episcopal Church built on what wascalled Church Creek, a branch of Cedar Creek, which empties into it atCoulter's mill. Daniel Sturgis of York County, SC owned land called Sturgis Chance and Double Purchase inWorchester County, Maryland. This same Daniel Sturgis lived in Sussex County, DE nearMilford in 1783.In York County, SC Deed Book B, page 52, Deed #20 dated 11 August 1787 thereis this information: "We whose names are hereunto subscribed do herebycertify that Daniel Sturgis late of Sussex County in the Delaware State,lived in good repute for several years in said County, and that during thelate Contest between America and British, he & his sons acted as goodcitizens of these United States and otherwise supported reputable Charactersas far as hath come to out knowledge."Signed by: Caleb Cirwithers, Lieut. Colo. Sussex County, Delaware; LukeWatson, Captain of a Company in Sussex County where said Sturgis did reside;Nathl. Young, Justice of peace for sd. County; Syndenham Thorne, Rector ofChrist Church & St. Mathews in Sussex County.The History of Delaware 1609-1888 by Col. J. Thomas Scharf has a list of taxpayers on pages 1250 and 1251, who were assessed for the year 1785 in SussexCounty, Delaware. The Sturgis names included were Daniel Sturgis and hisson's Laban Sturgis, James Sturgis, John Sturgis, and Joshua Sturgis. Therewas also an unknown Shadrach Sturgis.The will of Shadrach Sturgis was probated in Sussex Co, Deleware on 20 Feb 1797 with a Daniel Sturgis mentioned as administrator. No heirs are mentioned.
