[51] Preston was born on the Laster homeplace now located on the Red McCorkle Rd in Dist No 7 in Obion Co, TN. This farm was owned by his father and it bordered the farm owned by his Uncle Tommy later known as the King place. He moved with the family to a new farm purchased by his parents on the Rives-Mt Pelia Rd in 1918. He left home when he was about 17 and finished high school at Woodlin Mills, Obion Co, TN. Preston was known as a superb athlete, playing all sports in high school and college. He attended Murray State College in Ky and later the University of Kentucky where he obtained his master's degree in education. While at Murray State College (now University) he met Nina Faye Lynn who he married. After graduating from Murray in 1934 Preston took accepted a job teaching and coaching at Burritt College, Spencer, TN. The next year Preston and family moved to Morgan, Ky where he became the assistant principal of the school. In 1940-41 school year Preston was reassigned to the school at Butler, Ky and moved the family to Falmouth, Ky. In 1941 he accepted the position as principal of the Dresden, TN grammar and high school and the family which now included his two children moved to Dresden which made them only about 20 miles from their parents. In 1945 Preston accepted a position with the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society. This led the family back to Kentucky (Madisonville) and in 1946 to Macon, Georgia where he was first the assistant state manager and later state manager for middle Georgia. In Macon Preston became an Elder in the Southside Church of Christ and helped establish the Burton Avenue Church of Christ and became an Elder there also. Preston was also appointed an honorary Colonel on the governor's staff in Georgia.
