[856] James either died or left the family after about 1835. This is when son Jackson was born. Family tradition says that a neighbor by the name of Andrew Jackson Smith was the biological father of Jackson. It is perhaps correct to speculate that James left his wife and family over in incident. It is interesting to note that a James Lassiter is found on the Shelby County tax roles in 1837/8. Could this be the same James? A James Lassiter is found living in New Madrid, MO in 1850. Could this be our James as well? Another observation is that Elias, James son, named his first son James andhis first daughter Sarah for his parents.Update: Now it is clear that James Lasiter was the husband of Sarah. This is established in DecaturCounty, TN Deeds, Book 2, p. 358, where James and Sarah are mentioned plus children Isaac, Jemimah, and Elias. The fact that Andrew Jackson Laster is not mentioned is in keeping with the tradition then of children not born of both parents beingexcluded from common law inheritance.See notes on Sarah.
