Dorcas COULTER
C1745 - 19-OCT-1810
[1629]
Dorcas' will was filed in 1810, prob York Co, SC, named daughters Peggy Strait, Polly McClintock, &Hannah Wherry & sons William, Andrew, Thomas, and John; grandsons Samuel s/o William, Samuel Strait s/o Peggy, & granddaughters Dorcus & Mary Strait, d/o Peggy.
The 1800 Census list Dorcus as Darcus Wherry. She is listed as head of the household and would have been about 55 years old. There were six persons, including Dorcus, in the household plus three slaves. There were three boys, 16-25, and two girls, 10-15. The boys probably were William, John, and Thomas. Sons Andrew and Samuel, Jr were already away from home. The girls were probably daughters, Hannah, and either Polly or Peggy. One ofthe latter was probably married and away from home. It is to be noted that a Robert, Mary, and Margaret Coulter owned land in Chester Co, SC in 1771/2. Speculation is that they may have been related to Dorcas. Dorcas witnessed a will in Chester Co. in 1770 as Dorcas Wherry. Will: Witness to will of Elizabeth Lusk with Samuel Neely & Martha Workman 7 Oct. 1770 in Chester Co. Elizabeth's children: sons Robert & Samuel; daus. & sons-in-law Elizabeth & Hugh McCleland, Margaret & Hugh Whiteside. The following is taken from "The Sesquicentenial History of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church", York County, SC: "It may be seen that the name Coulter runs through several generations of the Wherry family. The Coulter connection is one of blood, for, when John Coulter of Mississippi died about 1819, the Wherry family were the heirs of his estate. The heirs were Andrew Wherry, William Wherry, Thomas Wherry, Samuel Wherry, John Wherry, James Strait, Thomas Campbell, and James McClintock, Esq.---all the children or children-in-law of Samuel and Dorcas Wherry. This would indicate that the ?Coulter connection existed in the generation of Samuel and Dorcas. This writer thinks it may be possible that Dorcas Wherry was, before marriage, Dorcas Coulter, perhaps the sister of John Coulter of Mississippi. See: Chester County Deeds, Book Y, pages 337-339."
