[245] Sophia was th widow of John Gilmore, an ARW veteran, who was born in 1750 and died in 1790. She soon afterwards married Joel Herring, Sr. She is probably not the mother of Lewis, unless Lewis is anadopted son of Joel Herring, Sr., since she married Joel 4 years after Lewis was born. Sophia was probably born in Bertie Co, NC, where her parentswere from, or Sampson Co, NC.Note from Carole Rigsbee:Sophia's maiden name was King she md. a John Gilmer or Gilmore after his death she md. Joel Herring. She was born c 1756 d/o Michael King #4 and Mary Elizabeth Snell. Her parents where born in Bertie Co, NC and moved to Sampson Co., NC. Her father's brother was William King who md. Margaret DeVane, they had several children one of which was William Rufus DeVane King who was Vice President with Franklin Pierce. He served this office for only 6 months before he died in Selma, Alabama on his plantation called "King's Bend".
